Internet’s Affect on 3rd Parties

In Henry Jenkins’s piece ‘Challenging the Consensus‘ (in response to Sunstein’s ‘The Daily We‘) Jenkins notes that

Those silenced by corporate media have been among the first to transform their computer into a printing press. This opportunity has benefited third parties, revolutionaries, reactionaries, and racists alike.

Indeed, while searching out there to see if there was any ‘up and coming’ party with a platform that better suited my beliefs I was AMAZED to see just how many other parties there are to chose from. Check out the directory of U.S. political parties and see what I mean.

One thing I did note when looking through the many non-mainstream (in some cases VERY VERY non-mainstream) parties websites was their horrible design and unfriendly navigation. If these “third parties, revolutionaries, reactionaries, and racists” are benefitting from the internet they are going to lose their abilities to draw internet support if they don’t start updating and modernizing their sites.
