Blogs & Bads

web blogs = blog & web ads = bads

In my grad class Politics & the New Media we have talked about website design and putting together a site that people want to visit and like when they do. We have also talked about blogs and how to use them in campaigns, and how to get more attention to your blog.

Well, what about Bads? How much does it cost to market your page (or your blog) on the web?

I came across the Liberal Blog Advertising Network’s pricing list for blog ads. I couldn’t believe it! $700 a week to advertise on the DailyKos. $700!!

Then again, the site gets an average of 2,614,742 hits per week. Now that’s a LOT of people.

With the internet sapping ad dollars away from the traditional media, I guess that paying $700 to reach millions of people does seem worth it.

$700 is very cheap, but I know that I usually never click on those ads. You get views, but I’d be curious about how many people click on them.

And with $700 from say 10 sponsors, one has to wonder whether Kos doesn’t want to be regulated by the FEC because of the money he collects every week from these sponsors.

Also, Kos lets you turn off the ads, doesn’t he? If I were an advertiser, I would be mad at this feature.

When you’re not a national candidate, you need to create some national appeal in order to justify spending $700 on a site like Daily Kos.

When you’re working for a candidate for Ohio Supreme Court, though, you’d be satisfied with a modicum of statewide appeal. Clearly, advertising on Kos would have been a waste of resources.

It’s hard to think of candidates who could foster national attention. I guess the candidate who opposes Tom Delay next year would benefit from such advertising; Bob Casey could; Hillary (straight or gay) probably could as well.

Personally, I think “bads” are a huge waste of money. I just don’t believe that anyone clicks on them because most of us have just learned to ignore them. When I read this post I thought, “Daily Kos has ads?” I read it almost every day.

Those ads that are designed so they can not be ignored are just SO annoying that users start to hate the company that would use them.

I don’t believe a smart campaign would spend its precious resources on this when they could be purchasing communication that people might actually receive.
