Brokeback Heart

» by Justin in: Gay

Brokeback Mountain Movie PosterIt seems like I have been waiting for Brokeback Mountain to come out for - it seems like - ever. FOREVER DAMMIT!

And it’s not only because Jake Gyllenhaal is one of the few people I could just stare at all….day…long. I think this movie is a milestone for gay inclusion on the big screen - or at least I hope it is.

Will & Grace‘ can be a very funny show, but I am tired of watching one neurotic romance after another end in one cliche way after another. Lindsay, Hillary, and Kirsten I love all your teenie bopper girl/boy romances but it’s time to make way for some boy/boy and girl/girl romances!

Now from all the stories I’ve heard and all the articles I’ve read, as long as they don’t chop out the “steamy sex scenes” (OMG need to stop clapping so I can write) I believe it will be the first big screen movie that portrays a genuine gay romance as the main storyline, inclusive of intimate scenes. Or at least the first one I’ve every seen.

Of course there have been movies that depict gay romance as the main storyline - Mambo Italiano, Beautiful Thing, and Latter Days are all great movies - but I saw not one of them at Hoyts with a big ol’ bag of popcorn and a cherry icee. AND as good as they were - they weren’t “Hollywood” movies - the acting, the sets, etc were not at the level of what Brokeback Mountain will be.

Jake Gyllenhaal - OMG YUMSo I sat here last night thinking - I can’t wait until December 9th. I NEVER see movies on opening night - I don’t think sitting in an overly crowded theatre and most likely being separated from your friends is pleasurable whatsoever - but with Brokeback I was planning to be one of the first in line. I wanted them to have a strong opening weekend - I wanted to be part of their success.

Alas, today I sit here with a Brokeback Heart. They are staggering the movie release.

December 9th, 2005 (NY/LA/SF)
December 16th, 2005 (expands to selects cities)
January, 2006 (expands wide)

Why do you taunt me Jake Gyllenhaal, why?

First of all… I love Jake!!! Second of all, I cannot wait to see this movie, but I do have a strong sense of “holding back”… I know how it ends, and it isn’t going to be happy. Oh well… I need a good cry. =o)

Pah, at least you’ll get to see it before us here in the UK!

Mr. G is however the hottest thing on two legs at the minute, so it’ll be worth waiting for!

I will be the first to admit that if the movie hits me right I will be a babbling fool right there in the theatre!

Hopefully this will be a great success and more of this type of movie will follow.

I usually wait for the DVD to come out - but will definitely see this one at the movies on opening day in our area. Just have to find out what date it opens in Orlando.

I too LOVE Jake and can’t wait for this movie. I was going to get the book but now I don’t want to know how it ends so no more hints, Duane!

I am seriously tempted to drive up to New York just to see this movie. Drive up - see it - drive back.

Well, ok, maybe stay the night - have some drinks and dance - but mostly for the movie!

Lisa - I’m with you! As much as I can handle knowing the ends of movies with this one I just don’t! I want it to be a total surprise.

I’ve got my tissue box ready.

I am listening to the soundtrack right now, and it is hard not to cry at the score music. All I have to say is “oh shit”. I am going to bring a towel. (for tears you pervs)

[…] That is, of course, unless you see a certain gay cowboy love story. Then all those boxes come crashing down. […]

I had the chance to see Brokeback at the Denver International Film Festival back in November. Ang Lee was there to talk after the movie and although it would have been wonderful for either Heath or Jake to be there, none of the “on camera” talent showed. Sigh! But the movie…we were one of the “select” theaters to open on the 9th as well. But be of good cheer! because of the response, they will be expanding the openings to more places. Now, when it opens in Cobb County (GA) to rave reviews, then I’ll be happy.
