A Problem…A Solution…A Detour

» by Justin in: My Life

I drove back to Massachusetts today. I had to.

This whole student loan thing is giving me an ulcer. I thought I had everything worked out - my deferments were going to end in May/June and I would consolidate and apply for a year long deferment.

I got all of my paperwork together - probably over 500 pages of loan statements - and organized them into lenders, years, etc. I even made a spreadsheet so I had a top summary of everything.

What can I say - this is me.

But of course…there was a problem.

I had taken a semester off between schools (when I transfered from Ithaca College back to Suffolk in Boston to take a job) so it broke all my loans into two separate loan periods. This basically means that the last two years of Ithaca and all my grad school loans end their deferment in June (like I thought) but EVERYTHING before that ends…um…NOW. :(
I have all the paperwork at my mom’s house. And I can’t have her running around to figure everything out. We’re talking about federal loans here - this could screw up my credit for LIFE. I don’t want to play with this kind of fire.

So there is the problem. ME + STUDENT LOAN DEFERMENT ENDING = ULCER

I know the solution should have been more clear - go home and deal with this so I could put it all behind me - but I must have been blinded by the glory that is Newark, New Jersey.

That was sarcasm.

The solution actually came from Mr. M! I was talking to him last night - well stressing to him last night - and he really calmed me down. He suggested doing my NJ interviews and then heading home before I headed back out to PA. Since I didn’t have any solid NJ interviews yet (but some great leads!) I decided to set up the interviews while at my mom’s place, deal with the student loans situation, and then head back to NJ to do the interviews.

ME + Mr. M = BALANCE :)
*sigh*

Which bring me to the detour. It will only be for one or two days but it has to be! This will make my stomach feel SOOO much better. It may also give me a chance to figure out my hard drive situation and do some of the web consulting work I have been lagging on.

M will be leaving for the funderal in France on Friday and might be gone until May the 5th. :( If you think it impossible to miss someone you haven’t met in person then come talk to me - I can tell you it’s very possible…

Did you ask about forbearance??? I had no problem when I couldn’t pay. I called and said, “Hey, got no money. Can’t pay.” The rep offered forbearance. NO paperwork or anything. They approved it with the phone call. This was through SAllie Mae. Can’t you just consolidate all the loans and then go into forbearance?
Anyway, I hope you get it worked out, Justin. Good luck.

“One advantage of borrowing through federal education loan programs is the availability of deferment and forbearance: two options for temporary relief of repayment problems. Deferment and forbearance can help you avoid delinquency and default.

Deferment lets borrowers, under certain conditions, postpone loan repayment for specified periods. Log in to Manage Your LoansSM to see if you’re eligible for deferment. Remember, you must continue to make loan payments until deferment is granted.

Forbearance can be an option for borrowers with temporary financial difficulty. You may suspend or reduce payments under certain circumstances and for specified periods. Forbearance is granted in increments for up to one year. You are responsible for interest and may pay it as it accrues. Any unpaid interest is added to your principal balance no more frequently than quarterly.”

ooh forbearance - that is good to know! thanks!!

I consolidated my federal loans today - all my private loans are with Sallie Mae so I’m not too worried about them. Now I’ll only have two loan payment - YAY! And hopefully after all the paperwork is done I’ll be able to put them all into forbearance/deferment for a year or two. That would be nice.

In any event, I’m feeling much better about it all!!
    :)

I do not think you should support Bratboyschool.com.

He asked all readers to donate money to help the site for copies of his maagazine and a “special gift”. This was never fulfilled and he realizes to respond to comments, emails or all comments to be posted about the topic.
