My Kennedy Center Cherry…

» by Justin in: My Life

…has been popped! Yay!

Outside of the Kennedy Center

My friend Brian and I were supposed to do dinner together today (Thursday) but we decided to do it yesterday instead. All of a sudden he calls me and tells me he has a “surprise” in which I need to get snazzed up for.

I was slightly anxious. hahaha I pushed him to tell me what was going on.

It seemed he had gotten two tickets to the private dress rehearsal of Bill Irwin and Kathleen Turner in Edward Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? at the Kennedy Center.

I got snazzed up quick! I had never been to the Kennedy Center and have always wanted to go. What better way to experience the place than in a small theatre with less than 50 people in one of their first performances here in DC!

Me, Brian - Outside of the Kennedy Center

We met in Dupont, got some Chipotle, grabbed a coffee, and then cabbed it to the Kennedy Center.

The play was AMAZING. I had only seen the film adaptation of the play (with Delta Burke…er…Elizabeth Taylor), but never read it or saw it performed. I was amazed at how different it was from the movie. Almost as amazed as how old Kathleen Turner looks now.

She was still beautiful - I love me some Kathleen Turner. You might laugh, but the first movie that comes to my mind when I think of her is V.I. Warshawsky. I think it’s because it was the first movie I saw when I was young that starred a strong woman kicking butt. I loved it.

And who doesn’t love Serial Mom? “Are those PUSSYwillows, Dotty?” That still cracks me up like nothing else!!

After the play we walked to the metro with one of Brian’s friends who was also in attendance that night. He was fun and funny. We were all in shock to see that the Cherry Blossoms outside the Kennedy Center were blooming. WTF?! It’s mainly due to all the warm weather we’ve been having. I hope they still bloom again in the spring!!

On our walk we all talked about the performance, gay life, and just about every random topic you could imagine. Brian and I hopped off the metro at Dupont so we could grab a couple of drinks at JRs.

I ran into a couple of people I knew, including my missed connection! Still cute as ever. haha

All in all, it was a very unexpected, but very cool evening. And SO much fun!!
