“The Great Indoors” from the album “Room For Squares” is one of my favorite John Mayer songs. Everytime I hear this song it reminds me of my apartment in Kenmore Square in Boston.
I have the best memories of coming home to my cozy apartment - set up just the way I wanted it - and putting this CD on while I made myself a light dinner. I would light up a few candles and grab a book (I had no TV at the time) and unwind from a long day at work. Still, to this day, that’s one of the happiest memories in my life.
It was the first (and subsequently last) time I had ever truly lived on my own - sans roommates - and it was one of the moments in my life where I had felt like I had “made it.” I had a job that was paying me very well, I was single, and I was loving it.
And this song brings me back there every time. Sometimes I hear it and want to cry - sometimes I sigh and smile. It all depends on where I am in my life at the moment.
It’s amazing the effect music can have.
The singing starts around 1:12
Check your pulse
Its proof that youre not listening to
The call your lifes been issuing you
The rhythm of a line of idle days
Scared of the world outside you should go explore
Pull all the shades and wander the great indoors
The great indoors
Lamplight makes the shadows play
And posters take the walls away
The tv is your window pane
The view wont let you down
So put your faith in a late night show
I bet you didnt even know
Depends on how far out you go
The channel numbers change
Scared of the world outside you should go explore
Pull all the shades and wander the great indoors
Though lately I cant blame you
I have seen the world
And sometimes wish your room had room for two
So go unlock the door
And find what you are here for
Leave the great indoors
Please leave the great indoors
Check your pulse
Its proof that youre not listening to
The call your lifes been issuing you
The rhythm of a line of idle days

Did you seriously link to the definition for “sans”?
Is that a big word for you?
I have quite a few songs that can just transport me back to a place in time or an emotion. The two that spring to mind the fastest are Sheryl Crow’s Soak Up the Sun (first moved to DC, walking to my first adult job in the mornings)….and Alanis Morrisette’s “Hand in Pocket” (a high school trip with one of my good friends).
Toby - I did seriously link to the definition of “sans”. It wasn’t for my edification. At some point in my life I learned the meanings of sans, et al, e pluribus unum, etc. But I had to ask and/or research to figure out what they were. I know someone out there doesn’t know what it means - I was paying it forward. Bitch!
Tim - I LOVE Sheryl Crow. “A Change Will Do You Good” still reminds me of when I worked one summer at a zoo near my hometown. Crazy!
Music is a powerful force - I agree. I get teary-eyed whenever I hear “Foolish Games”. There is something about that song that seems to ring true over and over again.
Justin,
I thought it was cool as hell that you linked sans, geeky, but cool! I laughed my ass off. But aren’t you nice to be concerned that someone might not know what it meant, very considerate.
You never forget the first place that is truly yours. When you find the right job for you (I can’t believe someone in DC has not snapped you up!) you will be able to do it again if that’s what you want.
Best wishes…I imagine that you have lots of readers cheering for you!
Best,
c.
Jason - “Foolish Games” SO brings me back to high school. Ah, Jewel. haha
c.fred - Thank you so much! You’re so sweet! I am crossing my fingers I hear back from a job I really want this week.
