NEW YORK (Reuters) - Gov. Eliot Spitzer plans to introduce a bill on Friday that would legalize same-sex marriage, even though he expects the bill to be rejected by the legislature.
The bill faces opposition from both Democratic and Republican lawmakers. Spitzer’s plan to introduce it would fulfill a campaign pledge to press for equal marriage rights for same-sex couples, a spokeswoman said.
“I do not think there’s a realistic shot that it gets passed but I will submit it because it’s a statement of principle that I believe in,” Spitzer, a Democrat, said on Monday.
