So Cruel…

» by Justin in: Technology

I just stumbled across this headline and couldn’t believe my eyes: “Hackers Assault Epilepsy Patients via Computer

Internet griefers descended on an epilepsy support message board last weekend and used JavaScript code and flashing computer animation to trigger migraine headaches and seizures in some users.

Wow. Now that’s just cruel…

Reporter Interviews Those Who Don’t Work

» by Justin in: Media

So last May (yes, I’m that behind in my blogging…) I caught this article about a reporter who interviewed people who weren’t at work. What did they do? Why weren’t they in an office? Why were they just sitting around in a coffee shop?

It occurred to me last night that you can learn as much about a city from what its people don’t do as you can from what they do do. So I drove to as many parts of San Francisco as I could and interrupted as much leisure as possible to find out.

Brilliant.

Margaret Mason, seated nearby, makes a living from her blogs, MightyGirl.com and MightyGoods.com. Her book “No One Cares What You Had for Lunch” was written from this same cafe.

“Face time isn’t such a thing anymore,” she said. “What people care about now is whether you get the work done.”

Sitting next to her was her husband Bryan. He has an actual office — just didn’t feel like going to it today.
Closer to the door sat Shauna, 24.

“I don’t work. I’m a trust-fund baby,” she said, with a nice mix of self-deprecation and not-too-much self-deprecation. What did she do today? “Got up at noon. Farted around. Made corn on the cob. Went to buy a shirt. Came to Ritual.”

It’s a great piece that makes you think about the quality of life you are living…

And I say cold, cold, cold…

» by Justin in: My Life

All of the traveling has finally caught up to me. I had avoided getting the sickness that has become legend - the SXSW plague - and I managed to avoid the flu my roommates both had.

I guess I am getting knocked out in round 3? Some people at work are sick and we all have the same symptoms, at the same time, which…well…just sucks! It’s only in my upper respiratory (as usual) with my nose and throat bothering me. No real pain, just discomfort and that whole elephant sitting on my face feeling.

So I’m still trying to get caught up after being away for so many days this month. I’m getting there though. I spent most of tonight going through so many of the links I sent to myself during the conferences - new social networking sites, cool ways to present data, etc. Geeky stuff. Being I’m a geek, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

My mom and I nailed down a weekend for her to come to DC to visit - the 18th - 20th of April. I’m really excited. Drew is going to make a big dinner for a bunch of us, I’ll probably take my mom out for a couple of drinks, and of course brunch! I’ve only got once conference in April which means with my mom coming I’ll have two whole weekends to myself. Yay!

So far in May I know I’ll be going to San Diego and San Francisco with Drew (he’s speaking at a conference and asked me if I wanted to tag along), I may be going to see Brad and Michael get married in PTown at the beginning of June, a bunch of us are going to PTown for a long weekend at the end of June, I’m going to Austin for Netroots Nation in July, the DNC Convention in August, the RNC convention in September, and who knows what else!

All too much to process right now. The cold (both temperature and sneezy) is taking me under the covers for some much needed sleep.

More coming soon…

The McCain Girls…

This, my friends, is just a perfect example of why McCain will lose. Oh, and he’s old.

I wonder what Simon Cowell would think…

Home, For Now

» by Justin in: My Life

I have been on the road almost the entire month of March. I spent 6 days at SXSW in Austin, then I spoke on a panel at an event the New Organizing Institute put on for up and coming bloggers, then I went to the Take Back America conference in DC, and then flew out to New Orleans for a conference put on by the Nonprofit Technology Network (NTEN).

I just got back last night and will now have 5 whole days in DC before I pack up and mosey on down to Philly for another conference, Eschacon.

Today I spent the entirety of my Sunday lounging and organizing. I was up super late last night because my body clock is once again off. Being in different time zones and staying up late every night and getting up early every morning has put me out of whack. Being up late and not having any reason to wake-up early allowed me to sleep until 1:30 this afternoon. WOW - I haven’t slept that late in MONTHS. It was very needed.

The rest of the day I caught up on bills, sent some emails, updated and added all the contacts I met while at all these different events, read up on some social networking links I’ve been collecting, and investigated some new features for my blog.

Oh, and I updated my Flickr account! I’m not sure if I mentioned it, but I broke down and bought a MacBook Pro last week and it has been the most amazing purchase I have made in years. EVERYTHING I do works better on this thing. And the way the keyboard is set up makes my wrists and hands (which have been carpal tunnel hurting-ish for a while now) feel much better. Uploading my pics to Flickr is also SO much better on my Mac. Maybe it’s the new uploader, or the uploader they make for the Macs, but it is easy to use and fast.

I plan on writing up more on the conferences, my thoughts about each one, and posting some great pics/videos. For now you can check out the below sets of pics. I haven’t tagged them or put titles/descriptions yet. All in time…
